I decided that I will be posting some various resources that have been helpful to the work of Aliquippa Impact in the area of positive youth development. We developed our youth programming in Aliquippa successfully because resources were made available to us that we could immediately implement. So from time to time you will see that I have posted resources underneath the “Youth Development” category on this blog. I have had others ask me for resources, so I hope I can refer them to some of these posts.
I highly suggest Core Standards for Philadelphia’s Youth Programs.
This document represents a very interesting project in Philadelphia that involved the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Various youth serving organizations gathered together to form city-wide standards for youth programming. This was very helpful on many different levels. As anyone who works in underserved populations knows, many people seek to provide youth programming with big hearts and good intentions, but the low quality of the programming simply does not allow for youth to be positively impacted. These core standards are realistic, even for smaller organizations, but they hold organizations to a higher level of accountability. The document also takes into account that some of the standards will need to be implemented over a period of time, so the various standards are given ratings based on their importance and feasibility over a period of time.
Aliquippa Impact has voluntarily decided to adhere to this document as a measure of accountability for our programming. Hopefully this resource will be helpful to others across the nation. This project (developing regional standards) needs to be duplicated in other areas of the nation.
